Yes as the title suggest keeping your WP installs upto date is not good enough by any means and at the same time you need to look into the other areas including your activated themes and all the activated plugins for that respective theme.

WordPress core is keep releasing latest version/updates at regular intervals and updating those is simply not enough and in order to keep everything updated you need to update your theme as soon as a theme author releases any update and please do not neglect this updates and don’t leg behind and if you fail to update your theme files then you’re simply creating a way for hackers to get into your site and inject malicious malware or steal your customers data just under your nose. I prefer you to buy a WordPress themes from well known author and well coded theme with regular updates. And keeping theme updated is really a good practice.

Updating your core WordPress is quite easy to do as simply clicking the update button in your admin dashboard and WordPress will download the necessary files, perform a validation of those files and then automatically update your site. Before updating your site, it’s always wise to perform a backup first, just in case something unfortunate happens during or after the installation.

WordPress admin dashboard will clearly notify you on if there is any update available within your admin dashboard including for core WP update, theme updates and plugins update and you can do all the update work in the dashboard itself.

If there are any updates available for your Plugins then that can be updated and will be listed in the Plugins section. To update your plugins, tick the boxes next to each of the plugins you wish to update and then click the Update Plugins button. The new plugin files will be downloaded and automatically installed.

If there are any themes that can be updated, these will be listed in the Themes section on the page. To update your themes, tick the boxes next to each of the themes you wish to update and then click the Update Themes button. The new theme files will be downloaded and automatically installed.

Plugins is one of the crucial add-ons for your WordPress themes and it gives you the extra power-lifting, functionality and makes it beautiful website or theme and what would happen to your site in case if you find any vulnerabilities in your activated plugin and makes way to attackers to attack your site with malicious malware. Yes this could happen to you or to anyone if you’re using plugins which are badly coded or if a plugin author installed a exploitable script or a plugin that is not updated for years and months which can’t be a compatible with new WP versions. So before you buy or download any plugin just make sure that author is having a good track record in updating his plugins and with clean coding practice.
